I read with my dog-eyes and it changed my life really I'm not kidding. her writing is so poetic, transgressive, intense and so so philosophical. I recommend you read Hilda Hilst at least once in your life :)

Esteban de Dorantes was an important explorer connected to the Coronado Expedition. He and fray Marcos de Niza led the reconnaissance expedition to Cíbola in 1539.” This Short story was one of the best stories in the world. For me it was not only entertaining but also brought hope for a change in the society by looking at who we can be and why we are the way we are today. Being Together and seeing how better we can live is what this story wants to convey.

Love your guys' analysis, it gave me more insight that kind of complemented my take on the story! So for me the story is about his obsession with her, her obsession with life, and the herculean power of her WILL! (which also ties in with the quote) He struck me as a weak, dependent character with no agency as you said. She on the other hand, my impression of her is the exact opposite of yours, she gave me the creeps right from the get go. She has a demonic rather than angelic feel; someone so hauntingly beautiful and ethereal with a light step you cannot hear, a voice so captivating and low, and those creepy, alien, a-bit-too-large eyes (that can see beyond what we see? know more than we know?), and who possesses a vast amount of knowledge?! A creature like that must hold secrets beyond the scope of us mere mortals and can't help but look at us with a little bit of amusement and pity .. even if she can love us with passion .. she is after all terrible and fantastic .. her love therefore also has to be vast and unfathomable. So when this terrifying creature is temporarily defeated by mortality, she doesn't deign to lie still and take it. Instead, she lingers and haunts the weak recesses of her husbands mind, taking power from his obsession with her and his addictions, making his mind even more pliable to her influence. She is even reflected in the ambience that he "chooses" to surround himself and his new wife with. She takes full hold of him finally, and influences him to poison her victim (poor Rowena!), in his stupefied haze he is unaware that he has become an instrument to this terrible spirit and even if he was, he'd probably only be too happy to do his obsessions bidding. Ligeia the terrible then continues to exercise her powerful will that seems like it is about to beat death itself as she struggles to take over the dead woman's body. How successful she is and for how long remains a mystery, as the narrator is speaking of her in the past tense. Phew! so that was my take :)) By the way, I discovered your channel after reading Absalom, Absalom, and looking for in-depth analysis videos on that mater piece to help tie everything up for me. I believe you did it justice and I thank you both so much for the insight and the pleasurable "ahaaaa" moments I lived with you lol (I binge watched the episodes btw :D) Also, I have never heard of Ligeia! YOU introduced me to it. I saw the video on your channel after watching Absalom, and instantly decided to read it and get back to your video (Because I love everything dark, supernatural and creepy!) So thank you both also for that :)))) I look forward to reading and watching more with you. Next on my list are (I'm going through a civil war and Faulkner moment - Ligeia was a pleasant break lol): Crane's Red Badge of Courage - Faulkner's Sanctuary & Requiem for a Nun - Maybe Sound and Fury after that :) See you guys around!

Krypto's analysis seems based on his idea that Jimmy is a little 'behind' the other young men in his understanding of upper class life, and that he even helped at the butcher's shop. In the story he is a little bit a fop who, "did not study very earnestly and took to bad courses," dresses the part, and wastes his father's money -- more due to drunkenness and peer pressure than bad habits. Jimmy may rank lower due to his father's background and his Irishness, but he's not so grounded. I think it's interesting that we have the paragraph about Jimmy's general carefulness and respect for his father's money. I also think it's interesting his father approves of him occasionally wasting it and of the social circle he wastes it in. In classic _Dubliners_ fashion, we're kept from the conclusion of these things changing, or any word on if they do.

Many thanks! Been reading along (Pevear/Volokhonsky) then watching your discussions. Still haven't read part 3 or the "missing chapter." I know it's impossible to talk about everything but I do wish you would have mentioned the visit to Semyon Yakovelich, the holy fool. (Chapter 5-II Before the Fête) This section was laugh-out-loud funny but also included subtle commentary on diversion, religion, society, our reaction to tragedy, and some curious actions by Liza. Yet, I felt the chapter was so out of place in setting (and style?) that I wonder what I'm missing.

I'm really interested in reading this story now ! Dealing with our own mortality is such a scary thing as we get older. It helps to have friends and family to urge us to go on with our daily lives even if we're facing an illness, or just aging in general. We all need HOPE. We all hope when we leave this life, it's for a better life..I hate the saying..."live each day as if it's your last." Because how can we truly do that ? We have jobs, and responsibilities that get in the way of living our lives to the utmost. We do the best we can. That's all we can do. I hate skulls, but you asked for a skull if we watched the entire video,so here it is.💀 Thanks for this review. Cindy 🌻

Early on in the book I associated the name 'Raskolnikov' with the word 'Rascal'. Which is defined as 'a mischievous or cheeky person, especially a child or man (typically used in an affectionate way).' Which in a way I think is partially fitting as even though Raskolnikov is a murderer and an unpleasant dude overall, we still feels some affection towards him as the reader like some of the other characters do. (I am aware though that in the Russian language this is not applicable. That is, 'Raskolnikov' is more closely associated with the Russian word for 'schismatic' or 'divided'.

I think that your "cog in the machine" argument is a little flawed since we are seeing it with modern eyes. I highly doubt tha contemporaries saw a monotonous urban life the same way we see "corporate jobs" now. Maybe they were complaining about the explotation going on in blue collar jobs (hence Karl Marx and comunism) but not boredom. Maybe H.M. was trying to write a satyre about a man who just refuses to do anything (to the point of starving himself to death), and the human need to know the reason, even if there are none, behind the world that surrounds us.

Oh, I could discuss this at length. I agree on some points, but let me give you guys a couple of corrections: It is mentioned a couple of times that the bird flies in, and near the end, one of you says it flies away. Wrong. "Open here I flung the shutter, when with many a flirt and flutter, in there stepped a stately raven..." And at the end, the raven "still is sitting, still is sitting..." You mention that the narrator is trying to get to sleep, or is getting ready for bed. Not quite. He is trying to bury his mind in obscure literature to escape the pain of dwelling on his loss. My inference is that if he just went to bed, his mind would be so occupied with her that he would not be able to sleep.

    • @TheCodeXCantina

I once read an analysis/theory that both characters are not separate characters but, in fact, represent the narrator’s split personalities. The story is far more psychological than people think. Poe struggled mightily with alcoholism, wavering between sobriety and drunkenness, and the theory is that the character being murdered in the story is actually the narrator conquering his own “alcoholic/destructive persona.” That’s why the narrator has no remorse 50 years later. He’s not a psychopath but actually a hero who conquered his inner demons-alcoholism.
